Step Up 4 Revolution….and spin on it!
Rollerwave Osborne Park
1988-89
Karl test rides a prototype of the wave
Everyone agreed that it was something new. Rollerwave had a curvaceous 8ft high metal ramp spanning one side of the warehouse. Opposite was an inflected 10ft metal monster mini quarter-pipe. The two beset a perpetual wave which I would describe as a giant pizza with a few extra slices inserted. The resulting bumps were engineered to revolve under the covering mat (which was skated on).
It seemed to cater for everyone. Fun times were had as experienced skaters used the rotating swell to pump extra speed to attack the metal ramps while the surfer-skaters spun 360s on undulating form in a way you never could on a wave.
The trouble with Rollerwave may have been it was conceived by surfers for skating and in parts imitated half-pipe design rather than wave dynamics. Extra speed can be a dangerous indulgence when you are dealing with an 8ft ramp. A smaller ramp like this already allows little in way of recovery time when a trick attempt fails. Then you can add the fact the surface bellow is an unforgiving concrete factory floor. The larger mini seduced many to attempting a longer grind along its arcing cope. For me; my boarding locking up for an instant then releasing gave me an ankle injury that still causes mild daily pain 30 years later. The damage to my wrist and elbow from the concrete floor is still with me also. I know everyone takes their chances at a place like this, but it is my opinion that a revolutionary idea needs a new look at safety requirements. Something more like a Grid Iron uniform could have affected unrestrained skate tactics and maybe inspired a few games too. For the surf stylers maybe wet-suit knee and elbow pads could have been a safety conscious gimmick.
Rollerwave was memorably shredded by touring VSW skaters; Lee Ralph, Eric Nash and Mike Crescini.
"Although I busted my leg at Rollerwave a few days before travelling across the Nullarbor; I went on take this photo of Sergei Ventura who I met and hung out with for a while at Ramp Riot II."

Volunteering work completion;
High Tide Art Festival
the High Tide Hub installation by Harris Architects
I helped with Zora Kreuzer 's Arcade Art at the Liebler Building on Cliff Street Fremantle too; colours reminiscent of the 1988 painting I did on the walls of Golden Bay's West Action shop.
